Bill Howes - Chariton

Sports Media 

The Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association is proud to recognize Bill Howes for a 2020 IHSADA Sports Media Award.

 

Bill grew up in DeWitt, Iowa, and attended DeWitt Central High School. I graduated in 1990.

 

Bill continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls from 1990-92. He then transferred to the University of Iowa where he double majored in English and Journalism.  He graduated from the U of I in 1995.

 

After he graduated from Iowa he worked as a salesperson at The Men’s Corner, a men’s clothing store, in DeWitt, Iowa, before taking a job with the Wellman Advance weekly newspaper in Wellman, Iowa, in late 1998.  He worked there for a short time writing news and sports and doing photography before moving to the Chariton Leader and Herald-Patriot in Chariton, Iowa in July 2000. Doug has been with the Chariton Newspapers for 19 ½ years and is currently the Associate Editor there. 

 

Along with sports, he also covers and writes news and feature stories and covers five boards including the school board, water board, city council, board of supervisors and hospital board, as well as, both news and sports photography.  He covers all the sports for the Chariton School District including football, volleyball cross country, basketball, wrestling, track, soccer, tennis, golf, baseball and softball.

 

He received the first Ambassador Service Award in 2010 for promoting the community and serving as a strong community ambassador through his work.  In 2015, he received the Friend of Charger Athletics Award for all the work he’s done in covering Chariton Charger athletics.
