Charles graduated from Sioux Valley High School (Now Sioux Central) in 1977 and from Wayne State College in 1981. He earned his Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of South Dakota in 1990. He began his teaching and coaching career in Pierce, Nebraska and after three years moved to Sheldon, Iowa. He has taught and coached at the Sheldon High School for the past 36 years.
Charles has taught math, science, and driver’s education at Sheldon. He has coached JV, Freshman, and 8th grade football; as well as, 7th and 8th grade basketball and track. He also served as weightlifting sponsor for many years and has also been a sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for the past 13 years.
Charles has run the basketball clock for JV and Varsity games for the past 36 years. He has also volunteered as clerk of the finish and hurdle set up for over 20 years at Sheldon Invitational track meets.
Community involvements over the years have included: Church Committees and Sunday School teacher at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Cub Scout Leader, and board member of the Sheldon Historical Society.
Charles has enjoyed working with young people, in the capacity of teacher, coach, and sponsor for the past 39 years in education.
