The Iowa High School Athletic Directors Association is proud to recognize Doug Rieder for a 2020 IHSADA Sports Media Award.
Doug grew up in Newhall, IA, and graduated from Benton Community High School in 1974. He earned an Associates of Arts degree in Radio Broadcasting in 1976 from Iowa Central Community College in Ft. Dodge.
He has worked as a broadcaster since 1976 in Iowa, mainly in sports play-by-play. Doug started at KJAN in Atlantic from 1976-78, and at KKEZ/KWMT in Ft. Dodge 1978-79. He moved to Jefferson in 1979 and worked at KDLS until 1994. In 1994 he started at KGRA and except for a short period, has been a sports broadcaster for the station ever since. He also has worked in radio sales much of that time. Doug was also the Sports Editor of Jefferson Herald 1993-2012, and served as Editor of Glidden Graphic 2003-2012. He returned back full-time in sales and sports at KGRA since 2012.
Doug has been a volunteer for Jefferson, Jefferson-Scranton, and Greene County School District primarily in athletics as public address announcer and statistician. He is also a classroom speaker on occasion. He has received the Friend of Education Awards from Jefferson-Scranton and Glidden-Ralston School Districts.
Doug is the former President of the Rotary Club of Jefferson, Jefferson Chamber of Commerce, Greene County Chapter of the American Cancer Society, 1984 Bell Tower Festival Chair, and is a current council member ISU Extension & Outreach for Greene County.
Doug has been married for 36 years to his wife, Sue. He has three stepsons and three grandchildren.
