Marie O’Connell graduated from Turkey Valley Community School in 1968. She graduated
from Upper Iowa University in 1972 with a double major in English and Speech Education. Her senior year of College Title 9 led to the school adding women’s basketball. Since she was
student teaching and unable to attend practices, she became the official scorekeeper.
An English and Speech instructor, she was occupied with several other activities including chaperone of the girls’ basketball team, director of plays, and large group speech coach. Retiring in 2014 after teaching 42 years, 40 in Iowa Falls, Marie didn’t want to retire entirely so she is a substitute teacher and continues to do the official book for both boy’ and girls’ basketball.
Marie is a member of the Iowa Falls Booster Club, as well as, a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, a member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church, and a member of the Beta Theta chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society.
Marie says, “In 1974 the girls’ basketball program was only a year old in Iowa Falls. I began as the chaperone and quickly added official score keeper for the girls’ program. When Randy Fiscus retired from doing the boys’ book, I added doing their book. After 45 years of supporting our young adults, I have no plans to retire. After all, we all need to support our young athletes so they can become the best people possible.”
